DIAL, Limerick

Specialist Service DIAL, Limerick (Disability and Independent Active Living)

This is a seven unit residential facility which accommodates young adults leaving the care system with learning disabilities (ranging from mild to moderate intellectual disabilities) who are at risk of falling into the cycle of homelessness. It is widely accepted that this client group does not have the capacity to sustain and maintain accommodation without it breaking down.

The service provides a programme of two years, tailored to suit each individual’s needs (taking into account their level of disability, any drug/alcohol misuse, family relationships and dynamics as well as any level of learned criminal behaviour). The resident is introduced into a structured system, whereby they learn how to engage with external agencies, link into training workshops or further education as well as further developing their interests and encouraging involvement in activities.

This is complimented by engaging in meaningful occupation within the house, i.e. learning how to cook, launder their clothes, practice good hygiene, pay their bills, manage their rent, budget for food and upcoming activities or events and form meaningful relationships with members of their local community as well as staff and other professionals. We also offer an outreach service, working with vulnerable young adults in their own accommodation.
