Knocklee House

Knocklee House offers transitional accommodation and support services to men and women in Tralee who are moving from being homeless and ultimately want to live in their own home. It accommodates 6 residents (men and women) and they move to independent living when they are ready and suitable accommodation is available. We work closely with the Homeless Information Centre of the Kerry CC and referrals are from homeless services in the area.

Residents do the shopping, cooking, cleaning and as much of the maintenance as possible as part of the preparation process for moving on. Staff are on site for 18 hours each day and offer support when needed but it is regarded as the residents' home for the period of their stay.

The house is spacious and has a friendly and welcoming atmosphere. Lifestyle skills are taught in an informal way. Where necessary staff will advocate for a resident (particularly at the early stage of the transition) but we actively promote self-advocacy through information and support. Guidelines are simple and minimal. Residents refrain for alcohol or illicit substances during their stay and treat others, including other residents and staff, with respect and dignity. This promotes dignity and respect when dealing with others and empowers clients to advocate to better effect, with more focus and to achieve better outcomes. Residents regularly discuss the operations of the service with staff.

Since opening at the end of 2006 many residents have moved on and are sustaining move-on accommodation on a long term basis.
