Ten Finglas West Cub Scouts and their two Scout Leaders came to visit NOVAS’ Abigail Women’s Centre on a wet Saturday afternoon just before Valentine’s Day. After a long walk up to the centre they were soaked but in good spirits. They brought cake, cupcakes, and brownies they had baked and decorated with the scout leaders and presented these, along with a handmade Valentine’s card, to the Abigail residents.

A staff member showed them around some of the building. They really enjoyed the table tennis in the dining room and had great fun on the gym equipment. One of the residents said it warmed her heart to see their little jackets lined up drying on the radiators in the dining room. When it was time to leave, our taxi driver Ollie, gave them a lift home so they didn’t have to get wet again. Joanne, the scout leader, said she didn’t stop smiling all day because the kids had had such a brilliant time.

At the Abigail Centre we work hard to engage the local community. Pavee Point and the Men’s Shed hold regular meetings and events on site and we also offer some of the classes in the service to members of the local community. We believe this is very important to integrate The Abigail Centre into the local community and to enhance the wellbeing and sense of belonging of our residents in the community in which they live. To date, we have enjoyed much success in this regard and look forward to many new ventures with the local community in the future.

Deputy Manager, The Abigail Women’s Centre
